Dyslexia Express is built for readers who are still developing their skills, so making the site easy to use for as many students, families, and teachers as possible is a priority.

What the site does

  • Readable text: body text uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, a font designed for legibility, with generous spacing.
  • Strong color contrast and large buttons that are easy to tap on tablets and Chromebooks.
  • Keyboard support: a “Skip to content” link, visible focus outlines, and number keys (1, 2, 3, 4) to choose answers in question games. Most games can be played with a keyboard.
  • Screen readers: games announce questions and feedback so screen reader users can follow along.
  • Sound you control: every game has a sound on/off button, and games that speak a word include a button to hear it again.
  • Reduced motion: games follow your device’s “reduce motion” setting and tone down animations.

Known limitations

  • A few drag-and-drop games are easiest with a mouse or touch screen.
  • Spoken words use the device’s built-in voice, so how they sound depends on the device.
